Winter Trail Challenge
We’re excited to set up a new South Shields Winter Trail Series in January!
Join us for a new unique trail challenge, open to all abilities. Non members and members of all clubs are welcome to take part. Each month there will be new marked course & challenge to tackle and runners will score points towards a league table. All runners will receive a Run Eat Sleep Winter Hat for taking part in the full series, or you can purchase one separately.
The Trail Series is a fun community event within Marsden Old Quarry Nature Reserve – a great event for running fitness, training and an introduction into trail running & cross country.
All runs will start at the White Horse Pub, Quarry Lane, NE347QZ. Free car parking available. Teas & coffees and toilets will be available at the White Horse after the run. Trail shoes are advised throughout the winter as the courses are on a mix of trail paths & grass, and can get slippy.
Challenge 1 – Sunday 16th January 8.30am – The Sunrise Trail 5km Runners will start in the dark with the sun gradually bringing light to the course as the run goes on. A great mix of running in the darkness & light (Headtorch & light reflective clothing required). Register from 7.45am-8.15am. CHALLENGE 1 ROUTE MAP
Challenge 2 – Sunday 23rd January 9.30am – Elevation and Hills 5km – the most challenging run of the series with a variety of testing climbs and descents within the Quarry. Register from 8.45am-9.15am CHALLENGE 2 ROUTE MAP
Challenge 3 – Sunday 6th February 9.30am – The Team Challenge 5km – runners work in pairs going in different directions round the set course (crossing each others paths on the course) and the overall time is given. Runners can run solo and have their time doubled for an overall result. Register from 8.45am-9.15am CHALLENGE 3 ROUTE MAP
Challenge 4 – Sunday 20th March 9.30am – One Hour Challenge – runners used a lapped course and have 1 full hour to cover as many laps as they can in the given time. Register from 8.45am-9.20am CHALLENGE 4 ROUTE MAP
Challenge 5 – Sunday 3rd April 9.30am – The Downhill Dash 4km approx – All runners will make their way to the top of the quarry as a warm up jog/walk and the Downhill Dash will consist of a shorter downhill run from the top of the quarry making your way back to the finish at the White Horse. This run will be staggered with individual or group start times based on results over the course of the series. Stronger runners will start later. Register from 8.45am-9.15am CHALLENGE 5 ROUTE MAP
We will allow up to 2 virtual runs in the series for those that can not make any of the set dates/time. Virtual runs must be completed in the week leading up to the run or on the morning of the run. Virtual runs will count towards the league table.

Full 5 Challenge Series £36 (Winter Run Eat Sleep hat included)
Each individual Challenge – £6 (Winter Run Eat Sleep hat can be ordered for an additional £7)
Entry on the day is available. Please place the entry fee in an envelope with your full name.
You can also pre-enter by transferring the entry fees to the RES Bank Account below, with your full name as a reference. The entry fees help us to deliver our community events & support RES Run Club.
